Overview
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a hidden gem in western Nepal that takes adventurers into the remote and mystical Dolpo region. Renowned for its sapphire-blue alpine lake nestled beneath rugged cliffs and pine-covered hills, this trek offers one of the most unique landscapes in the country. The journey begins in Juphal after a short flight from Nepalgunj and follows a trail through charming villages, centuries-old monasteries, and the spectacular Shey Phoksundo National Park, which is rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage.
Unlike more commercial trekking routes, the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is largely untouched by modern development, providing a true off-the-beaten-path experience. Trekkers will witness traditional Bon and Tibetan Buddhist cultures, explore yak caravans and mud-brick villages, and pass through forested canyons that eventually open up to the stunning turquoise lake. The lake itself, situated at an altitude of 3,611 meters, is considered sacred by the locals and is surrounded by spectacular cliffs and glaciers.
This moderate trek typically takes about 8–11 days and is suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. It does not require high-altitude experience, but its remote location means you should be prepared for basic facilities and longer travel logistics. For those seeking raw natural beauty, cultural depth, and solitude, the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a truly rewarding journey into one of Nepal’s most untouched corners.

Another hour of walking takes us to Kal Rupi and then on to Raktang (2260m). You cross to the west bank and trek past numerous goths and horses pastures over a ridge to the rough stone houses of Jyalhasa, a wintering spot for the people of Ringmo. You keep walking upstream to another bridge, cross it to the east bank, and make your way past some crude teashops and a bridge over a side stream, the Ankhe Khola, at 2460m. The trail makes some ups and downs through grass and ferns to a trail junction. The fork is the old trail leading to the army and national park post at Ankhe, and on to the old trail that passes the villages of Rahagoan and Parela, high on the ridge above. These three villages a strange name connection: Parela (parela means eye-lashes), Rahagoan (raha means eyebrow) and Ankhe (ankha is eye).

As vaccination requirements change frequently, we suggest you to consult your doctor at least 2 months prior to the beginning of your trip. We recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis and polio.
The main health consideration during Shey Phoksundo Lake Trekking is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You may experience some mild symptoms initially, such as headache, lethargy, nausea and difficulty sleeping, but these should lessen within a few days. To avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), people take pills called ‘Diamox’. You can also use these pills after consulting with your doctor and purchase them in Kathmandu. Our itinerary will allow your body to acclimatize properly and handle the low oxygen rate.
If you have ever suffered from altitude sickness, or have a heart or breathing complaint, we highly recommend you to consult your doctor about your suitability for trekking in high altitude areas before booking. We suggest that you take some pain-killing pills with you and enough medicine for cold, diarrhea, nausea and fever. Some nasal ointment and throat-moistening pills will greatly help for those who are sensitive to chilly or freezing weather conditions.
Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a moderate to fairly challenging trek that goes right into remotest corner of high mountain country and over high pass. The maximum altitude you reach is at 3612 meters. No previous experience is required, you should be moderately fit, used to some regular exercise and enjoy walking in the high altitude conditions.
Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a tea house. A Nepalese tea house is a lodge or guest house located in one of the trekking regions in the Nepal Himalayas. At the end of the day’s trekking you pitch up and have a room and food provided. Teahouse trekking in Nepal is an incredible experience.
There are plenty of basic, clean and friendly lodges along the trail. You often have to share rooms but you can also stay in single rooms where possible. Rooms are basic, normally just a bed with a pillow and blankets. A few have electric blanket, hot bags (luxury lodges) and all have a spacious dining room-lounge.
We will accommodate you and your group in a comfortable local lodge each day. The Guide coordinates with the local lodge owners and a porter is sent ahead to book the required rooms for the group (rooms cannot always be booked in advance).
On trek, we have breakfast and dinner in the tea-houses/lodges we spend the night and lunch on our way to the next destination. Nepalese, Tibetan, the more common continental and Indian cuisines are common choices in the menu.
To get an idea about your meals on the go, breakfast comprises a hot beverage, toasts, pancakes, eggs, etc. while lunch will include rice items, noodles, potato varieties, pizza, pasta, burger, meat items, and so on. The starters in dinnertime are soup varieties while the main course includes more or less similar items as that of lunch menu, including a dessert item and a hot beverage.
1. A Typical Day on a Tea House Trek in Nepal
We provide a comfortable experience on our teahouse lodge-style treks. Our team works hard to support you so that you can relax and enjoy trekking in Nepal. The lodges provide your meals in a communal dining room. There is a range in standard and service in teahouse lodges depending on location. i.e. lodges at higher altitude and places with fewer trekkers tend to have more basic facilities.
The day starts with getting up in your room shared with another trekker in our group. Before heading for breakfast you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag. You would have given your breakfast orders to the guide to pass onto the kitchen last night.
At the designated time the group will assemble in the dining room to eat breakfast. The menu has a range of items to choose from such as porridge, cereals, chapattis, and a choice of egg dishes. There is also the choice of tea or coffee plus other hot drinks like the popular ginger, lemon honey drink.
While the group is having breakfast the porters arrange their loads and set off in the cool of the morning. After breakfast, between 7am and 8am, we start trekking. The pace of the trek is moderate as there is plenty of time in the itinerary to reach the lodge for tonight. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local villages. Lunch will be around midday at a teahouse lodge by the side of the trail.
After lunch, we continue the trek and on most days we arrive at the lodge by mid- afternoon. For dinner, you get a two-course dinner (soup and main meal). The menus are quite standard with a range of dishes such as dal bhat, momos and the famous Sherpa stew. Dal bhat is a Nepalese dish of rice and lentils with vegetable curry. It is also possible to order spaghetti and pasta; pizzas; vegetable burgers and chips and fried rice.
After the meal, the leaders will discuss the plan for the next day. Afterwards, people might stay in the dining room chatting about the day’s events or playing cards. After a tiring day, most people head to their rooms quite early for the night. Tomorrow is likely to be very similar to today!
We cater for a variety of dietary requirements. There are always meals that are suitable for vegetarians. During booking, we find out if you have any dietary needs and agree upon meal plans before departure. If you have any questions about the food provided please get in touch with us to discuss further.
You fly to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu and then you take another short flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. The starting point of the trek is Juphal. On your return, take the flights from Juphal and further to Kathmandu on the same day.
Please consider that there is a high probability of cancellation of flights operating between Nepalgunj and Juphal due to bad weather conditions. Hence, we advise you to keep at least one day extra in Kathmandu before your flight home.
Our 12 days Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek cost is all inclusive of your accommodation, meals, permits and other official expenses.(See price includes and excludes section for more detail). Besides, other expenses depend on your spending habits. A USD 10-15 is sufficient to buy bottled water, snacks, chocolate bars, hot and cold drinks, and showers during the trek besides your included meals and accommodation.
Money exchange facilities are virtually nonexistent along the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek, as the region is remote and underdeveloped in terms of financial infrastructure. There are no banks, ATMs, or official currency exchange centers once you leave Nepalgunj or Juphal. Therefore, it is crucial to exchange all necessary Nepali currency in Kathmandu or Nepalgunj before beginning the trek. All transactions in the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek region are done in cash, and credit or debit cards are not accepted. Trekkers should carry enough small denomination notes to cover meals, accommodation, guide or porter tips, and any unforeseen expenses along the route. It's also wise to keep extra cash for emergencies, as there are no opportunities to withdraw or exchange money once the trek begins.
Tips are appreciated by your support team after the completion of your trekking in Nepal. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work. As a suggestion, we advise that you can allocate 5- 10 % of the total tour cost as tips. It is recommended that you talk to the members and hand it over individually as per the hierarchy on the last day of the trek.
Communication facilities on the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek are limited due to the region’s remote and rugged nature. In lower areas such as Juphal and Dunai, basic mobile networks like NTC and Ncell may work intermittently, but as you ascend toward Phoksundo Lake and deeper into the Dolpo region, mobile signals become weak or nonexistent. Internet access is minimal, and Wi-Fi is generally unavailable beyond Dunai. Some lodges and government offices in key villages like Ringmo may have satellite phones for emergency use, but trekkers are advised to carry a satellite phone or rent a satellite messenger device (such as Garmin InReach or Thuraya) for reliable communication. It’s essential to inform family or emergency contacts in advance that you may be out of reach for several days during the trek. Guides and trekking agencies often coordinate logistics using radios or satellite tools, ensuring a basic but functional communication line in case of emergencies.
During trek your main luggage will be carried by porters. You simply carry a day pack with water bottle, camera, sun-screen, spare jacket, etc. - a small load that allows full enjoyment of the trek. A trek bag is ideal for your main luggage, plus a small lockable bag for travel clothes or anything that you do not need during trek which you can leave at hotel’s locker room/safe deposit box in Kathmandu for free of charge. Weight allowance at Nepal’s domestic airlines is 15 Kgs, excess weight is chargeable at USD 1 or more per Kilo depending on sectors.
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a moderately challenging trek that requires a good level of physical fitness, stamina, and mental preparedness. Although it does not involve high mountain passes like Upper Dolpo treks, the trail includes steep ascents and descents, rugged terrain, and elevations reaching over 3,600 meters at Phoksundo Lake. Trekkers should be comfortable walking 5 to 7 hours a day for several consecutive days, often on narrow, uneven paths. Prior trekking experience is beneficial but not mandatory; however, regular cardiovascular training, hiking practice, and strength-building exercises are strongly recommended at least a month before the trip. Proper acclimatization, staying hydrated, and maintaining a steady pace are key to preventing altitude-related issues. With the right preparation and mindset, trekkers in reasonably good health can enjoy this rewarding journey through one of Nepal’s most remote and spectacular regions.
The main trekking season in Nepal is from October to mid-May when daytime temperatures at most altitudes are generally comfortable for walking, the sky is clear much of the time and rain and snow are occasional occurrences. Daytime temperatures will vary from 15ºC to 35ºC in the Kathmandu Valley to around 10ºC at 3,600m and progressively lower the higher we go.
Different seasons offer different advantages for trekking.
Post Monsoon/autumn: Mid-September to November. This is the main trekking season in Nepal. Day temperatures in Kathmandu are approximately above 20ºC. Skies are usually clear and days on trek are sunny and mild with clear mountain views. At the highest altitudes although the days can be nice and sunny the temperatures can drop to 10ºC and much lower. Nights will be colder with temperatures dropping as low as minus 10ºC and lower at the highest altitudes.
Pre-monsoon/spring: March to May. Both day and night temperatures will be warmer in general but haze will often build up in the afternoons. It is very hot in the lowlands and temperatures rise to 35ºC in Kathmandu. Flowers bloom in this season and this is one of the reasons people chose to trek in spring.
Snow can be expected on any departure, usually at the higher altitudes. Summit day will be a very early start (usually about 2am) and will be extremely cold. Although mostly it is calm and clear on summit day the mountain does occasionally get high winds. You need to be equipped for temperatures as low as minus 25ºC plus wind chill on summit day.
Please remember that in any mountain area the weather is never wholly predictable and you should be prepared and equipped to deal with any differences in weather beyond the conditions described above.
We supply a medical bag with standard medicines prescribed by trekking doctors and a user’s manual. Since our staffs/guides are not qualified for suggesting medications to western clients, we would request you to use the medicines upon your own risk. It is safer and more reliable if you have your own medicine kit and not depend on what we have.
Your safety and security are our top priority, and we always make sure that nothing untoward happen to you. However, if anything serious like sickness or a casualty occurs, we will do everything to transfer you to the nearest hospital. As you are responsible for all the expenses incurred in evacuation, please make sure that it is covered by your insurance before assigning for it.
Staying adequately hydrated is crucial for trekking. You have to consume at least 4 liters or more of water to counter sweat-induced water loss. While natural water sources like rivers and springs are abundant on the trails, they are unsafe for direct consumption. To address this, tea shops heat water and offer it to trekkers. Boiled water is available for free at tea houses, but at tea shops, a small fee of USD 1 or 2 may be charged.
An alternative is purifying tap water using purification tablets. It’s advisable to carry a water bottle with a built-in filtration system, allowing you to filter water from natural sources along the trail. If you prefer the conveniences of bottled water, mineral water bottles are available for purchase at around $2 to $3. Although we strictly discourage the use of one-time plastic bottles on the trek path due to the increasing issue of plastic waste on the trekking trails.
All our guides are certified and trained trekking leaders. Our guides are certified by the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), Nepal. They have years of experience working in this line of work and know the different trekking trails of Nepal, mountain ranges, culture, and mountain sickness.
Your booking of this Shey Phoksundo Lake Trekking will be confirmed by email once we receive your deposit of 20% of the total trip and the signed copy of booking form and contract. This remote and culturally Tibetan-influenced region lies in the Trans-Himalayan zone, bordering the Tibetan Plateau, and is part of Karnali Province. The trek typically begins from Juphal, a small airstrip town accessible via a short flight from Nepalgunj. From there, the trail leads north through the scenic Suligad Valley to the iconic Phoksundo Lake, situated at an altitude of 3,611 meters near the traditional village of Ringmo. The region is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, rich biodiversity, and spiritual significance, offering trekkers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage far removed from Nepal’s more commercial trekking routes.
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a truly special experience because it takes you into one of the most untouched and mystical corners of the Himalayas, where time seems to stand still. Unlike other popular trekking routes, this journey offers a rare blend of pristine natural beauty, deep spiritual heritage, and authentic cultural encounters. The star of the trek, Phoksundo Lake, with its mesmerizing turquoise waters set against dramatic cliffs and snow-capped peaks, is one of the most breathtaking sights in Nepal. The trek passes through ancient Bon and Tibetan Buddhist villages, where centuries-old traditions still shape daily life. The silence, remoteness, and raw landscapes create a sense of peace and introspection that few other treks can offer. For those seeking a deeper connection with nature and culture—away from the crowds—Shey Phoksundo is not just a trek, but a profound and unforgettable journey into Nepal’s spiritual highlands.
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is suitable for trekkers of all ages who have a moderate level of physical fitness and a spirit for adventure. It does not involve extremely high passes or technical climbing, making it accessible to first-time trekkers, families with older children, nature lovers, and cultural explorers alike. While prior trekking experience is helpful, it is not mandatory—as long as participants are prepared for 5 to 7 hours of walking per day on rugged mountain trails at altitudes up to 3,611 meters. The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek covers a total distance of approximately 55 to 65 kilometers (34 to 40 miles) round trip, depending on the specific route taken and any side hikes included. The trek typically begins from Juphal and follows the Suligad River valley through Dunai and Chhepka, gradually ascending to the picturesque village of Ringmo, which sits beside the stunning Phoksundo Lake at an altitude of 3,611 meters. The daily walking distance ranges from 8 to 15 kilometers, with 5 to 7 hours of trekking per day. Although not the longest trek in Nepal, the distance combined with the altitude and terrain makes it a moderate challenge—perfect for trekkers seeking a shorter yet truly rewarding Himalayan experience.
The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek region lies within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal's largest and only trans-Himalayan national park, renowned for its remarkable ecological diversity. The trail to the turquoise-blue lake passes through lush forests of blue pine, spruce, juniper, and silver fir at lower elevations, transitioning into alpine meadows and barren cliffs as you ascend. The region is also home to rare and endangered wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, Himalayan blue sheep (bharal), musk deer, goral, and Himalayan tahr. Birdwatchers may spot species such as the Himalayan griffon, Tibetan partridge, and impeyan pheasant (Nepal’s national bird). Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek is a fairly challenging trek but incredibly rewarding adventure. A good level of physical fitness is required because it involves walking for several hours a day, frequently uphill, and at high altitudes. We highly recommend that you keep up a regular exercise routine for weeks before the hike. If you have any health issues, consult with your doctor before starting the hike.
Here are some tips to help you overcome difficulties during the trek and make the most of it:
Physical Preparation
We recommend you start fitness training before your trek. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and endurance activities. Incorporate uphill and downhill walking into your training to simulate the trek's terrain.
Altitude Acclimatization
This extraordinary trek usually starts from Juphal, which is accessible by domestic flight from Nepalgunj. The trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek region involves a gradual ascent, allowing your body to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Our itinerary grants your body time to adapt to the increasing altitude, reducing the risk of altitude-related illnesses. As you venture deeper into the Upper Mustang trekking region, the air gets thinner, the temperatures drop, and the landscapes become more surreal.
Hydration and Nutrition
You may have heard that everyone should drink eight glasses of water a day. Our guides are trained to keep you well-hydrated throughout the trek. We recommend you drink as much water as you can. Consume a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and essential nutrients. Eating light but frequent meals is recommended. Keep a nutrition bar in your day bag.
Pacing and Rest
Rest is essential for acclimatization and overall well-being. Pace yourself during the trek. Avoid rushing to prevent exhaustion and altitude-related issues. Listen to your body and our guide. Always take breaks as needed.
Proper Gear
We recommend you invest in high-quality, certified trekking gear, including comfortable and sturdy boots, warm clothing, a good backpack, a day bag pack, and other essential equipment. Dress in layers so that you can easily adjust to changing temperatures and conditions.
Mental Preparation
Stay positive and focused. A positive mindset can help you overcome challenges more effectively. If you have any issues that come to mind, kindly share them with our guide.
Our guides and porters are experienced in the Upper Mustang trekking region. They can provide valuable insights and assist with logistics, allowing you to focus on the trek itself.
Medical facilities along the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek region are extremely limited due to the area's remote and rugged terrain. There are no hospitals or fully equipped health posts along most parts of the trail, especially after leaving Dunai—the district headquarters of Dolpa—which has the only basic hospital in the region. Trekkers may find small health posts or first-aid stations in larger villages like Ringmo or Juphal, but these typically offer only minimal care, such as basic medications and wound dressing. For any serious medical issues or emergencies, evacuation by helicopter is the only viable option, underscoring the importance of carrying a well-stocked personal first-aid kit, having comprehensive travel insurance that covers high-altitude evacuation, and trekking with a registered guide familiar with emergency protocols.
