Overview
The Lower Dolpo Trek is a spectacular journey through one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich regions, located in the western Himalayas of Dolpa district. Unlike its more strenuous counterpart, the Upper Dolpo Trek, this route offers a more accessible yet equally captivating adventure, making it suitable for trekkers seeking a blend of natural beauty, high-altitude landscapes, and ancient traditions. The trek typically begins with a flight to Juphal via Nepalgunj, from where the trail leads through stunning valleys, high ridges, pine forests, and deep canyons, eventually reaching the mystical Shey Phoksundo Lake, the deepest lake in Nepal known for its striking turquoise color.
One of the major highlights of the Lower Dolpo Trek is the opportunity to explore the Shey Phoksundo National Park, a protected area rich in biodiversity and cultural heritage. Trekkers will pass through traditional Tibetan-influenced villages such as Ringmo and Chhepka, where the ancient Bon religion and Tibetan Buddhism are still actively practiced. The landscape transitions dramatically from lush green forests to barren alpine terrain, offering dramatic views and an ever-changing trekking experience. Along the way, trekkers may encounter rare wildlife such as blue sheep, Himalayan griffons, and musk deer, as well as medicinal plants and a diverse array of flora.
Though less demanding than Upper Dolpo, the Lower Dolpo Trek still requires a moderate to good level of physical fitness, as it involves crossing high passes like Numa La (5,190 m) and Baga La (5,170 m). The trek usually spans 16 to 20 days, depending on the route and acclimatization needs. Due to its remoteness, tourism in Lower Dolpo remains limited, ensuring a peaceful and crowd-free experience. This trek is ideal for those looking to step off the beaten path and immerse themselves in raw Himalayan beauty and ancient culture, making it one of Nepal’s most rewarding hidden gems.

As vaccination requirements change frequently, we suggest you to consult your doctor at least 2 months prior to the beginning of your trip. We recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis and polio.
The main health consideration during Dolpo Trekking is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You may experience some mild symptoms initially, such as headache, lethargy, nausea and difficulty sleeping, but these should lessen within a few days. To avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), people take pills called ‘Diamox’. You can also use these pills after consulting with your doctor and purchase them in Kathmandu. Our itinerary will allow your body to acclimatize properly and handle the low oxygen rate. If you have ever suffered from altitude sickness, or have a heart or breathing complaint, we highly recommend you to consult your doctor about your suitability for trekking in high altitude areas before booking. We suggest that you take some pain-killing pills with you and enough medicine for cold, diarrhea, nausea and fever. Some nasal ointment and throat-moistening pills will greatly help for those who are sensitive to chilly or freezing weather conditions.
The Lower Dolpo Trek is considered a moderately challenging trek, suitable for trekkers with good physical fitness and some prior hiking experience. While it doesn’t reach the extreme altitudes of Upper Dolpo, the trail still involves crossing high mountain passes such as Numa La (5,190 m) and Baga La (5,170 m), which require proper acclimatization and endurance. The terrain includes steep ascents, rocky trails, and remote paths with limited access to modern facilities. Due to its isolated nature, trekkers must be self-reliant and prepared for basic accommodations and unpredictable weather. Although not technical, the trek demands mental resilience and physical preparedness, making it ideal for those seeking a remote and rewarding Himalayan adventure without extreme difficulty.
Lower Dolpo Trek is a fully Camping Trek. Camping trek means sleeping in tents. On a camping trek, the tents provided are ‘Two men dome’ or ‘A’ shaped. Foam mattress with insulation underneath is provided for sleeping. Clients need to have their own sleeping bag. Bags or cloth packs are used as pillows. If you wish, you can bring your own ‘Air pillow’.
We provide three tasty, plentiful and nutritious meals daily with a variety of local and Western dishes. To start the day, breakfast consists of a choice of porridge, muesli and cereal followed by omelet, fried or scrambled eggs with chapattis or bread. Lunch is generally a selection of salad, cooked vegetable dishes, pasta and traditional breads. After a long day on the trail, dinner is a hearty 3 course meal - soup, followed by a variety of vegetable, meat, rice and pasta dishes and completed with a simple dessert. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate are also provided at all meals. We use as much fresh produce as possible and special diets are regularly catered for. The leaders are able to maintain very tight controls on health and hygiene in the kitchen with respect to general cleanliness and food preparation and also within the group with respect to personal hygiene. This has allowed us to maintain remarkably high standards of health over many years of trek organization - and good health is vital to an enjoyable and successful trek and climb. All foods are well cooked and vegetables are treated by potassium permanganate or iodine. Boiled water is served for drinking. Antiseptic soaps and potassium or iodine treated water are provided for washing. Special dietary requirements can always be taken care of.
Your typical day begins with a hot cup of tea brought to the tent at about 6 am, followed by a bowl of hot water for washing. After packing all your bags and having a good breakfast, we set off on the morning’s walk. All you need to carry is a small day pack containing water bottle, camera, sun cream, hat, rain jacket and a warm jumper, just in case. The porters will carry the rest of your gear for you. After walking for 3-4 hours, we stop for lunch at around midday. The afternoon’s walk is generally shorter and we arrive at camp in time for afternoon tea. The remainder of the afternoon can be spent exploring the nearby villages, doing a bit of washing or simply relaxing with a good book. On some days, we will arrive at camp by lunchtime and the entire afternoon will be free.
Dinner is usually served between 6 and 7 pm. After dinner, the evening will often be spent playing cards and talking with the crew, or perhaps even joining in some singing and dancing, before heading off to the tent for a well-earned sleep.
You fly to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu and then you take another short flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal. The starting point of the trek is Juphal. On your return, take the flights from Juphal and further to Kathmandu on the same day.
Please consider that there is a high probability of cancellation of flights operating between Nepalgunj and Juphal due to bad weather conditions. Hence, we advise you to keep at least one day extra in Kathmandu before your flight home.
Our 18 days Lower Dolpo Trek cost is all inclusive of your accommodation, meals, permits and other official expenses.(See price includes and excludes section for more detail). Besides, other expenses depend on your spending habits. A USD 10-15 is sufficient to buy bottled water, snacks, chocolate bars, hot and cold drinks, and showers during the trek besides your included meals and accommodation.
The Lower Dolpo Trek leads you through some of Nepal’s most remote and underdeveloped regions, where money exchange facilities are extremely limited or nonexistent. Unlike popular trekking areas such as Annapurna or Everest, there are no banks, ATMs, or currency exchange services along the Lower Dolpo trail. Trekkers are strongly advised to exchange sufficient Nepali currency in Kathmandu or Nepalgunj before starting the journey. All expenses along the trail—including accommodation, food, permits, and porter or guide fees—must be paid in cash. Since electronic payments are not available in the Dolpo region, carrying ample cash in small denominations is essential for a hassle-free trekking experience.
Tips are appreciated by your support team after the completion of your trekking in Nepal. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work. As a suggestion, we advise that you can allocate 5- 10 % of the total tour cost as tips. It is recommended that you talk to the members and hand it over individually as per the hierarchy on the last day of the trek.
While trekking you may not have an access to telephone facility for some days or weeks. However, en route there may be few places where telephone facilities may be available and likely to be working.
If it is urgent for you to be in contact with your family and friends, we can provide the Satellite Phone along with rental charge on request.
During trek your main luggage will be carried by porters. You simply carry a day pack with water bottle, camera, sun-screen, spare jacket, etc. - a small load that allows full enjoyment of the trek. A trek bag is ideal for your main luggage, plus a small lockable bag for travel clothes or anything that you do not need during trek which you can leave at hotel’s locker room/safe deposit box in Kathmandu for free of charge. Weight allowance at Nepal’s domestic airlines is 15 Kgs, excess weight is chargeable at USD 1 or more per Kilo depending on sectors.
The Lower Dolpo Trek demands a good level of physical fitness and stamina, as it involves walking for 5 to 7 hours daily across rugged mountain terrain, including high-altitude passes above 5,000 meters. While the trek does not require technical climbing skills, trekkers should be prepared for steep ascents, descents, and long stretches of isolated trails. Prior experience with multi-day trekking at altitude is highly beneficial, though not mandatory if one trains in advance. Regular cardio workouts, leg-strengthening exercises, and practice hikes with a backpack are recommended to build endurance. Proper acclimatization, hydration, and a steady pace are essential to managing the altitude and ensuring a safe and enjoyable trekking experience.
The best seasons to trek in the lower Dolpo trekking region are Autumn (from mid- September till November end) and Spring (from the beginning of March until mid-May).
Temperatures will drop considerably as you trek higher everyday. The nights are cold (between -10 C and 5C) but the days are sunny and hot (between 10C to 20C).The mornings are usually clear, with clouds building up during the afternoon, disappearing at night. Dolpo region being located in rain shadow area it may be possible to trek during monsoon but domestic flights are often disrupted by heavy monsoon cloud and rain. March, April, October and November are the most popular and favored months for traveling. Please choose the time that is convenient for you.
We supply a medical bag with standard medicines prescribed by trekking doctors and a user’s manual. Since our staffs/guides are not qualified for suggesting medications to western clients, we would request you to use the medicines upon your own risk. It is safer and more reliable if you have your own medicine kit and not depend on what we have.
Your safety and security are our top priority, and we always make sure that nothing untoward happen to you. However, if anything serious like sickness or a casualty occurs, we will do everything to transfer you to the nearest hospital. As you are responsible for all the expenses incurred in evacuation, please make sure that it is covered by your insurance before assigning for it.
Staying adequately hydrated is crucial for trekking. You have to consume at least 4 liters or more of water to counter sweat-induced water loss. While natural water sources like rivers and springs are abundant on the trails, they are unsafe for direct consumption. To address this, tea shops heat water and offer it to trekkers. Boiled water is available for free at tea houses, but at tea shops, a small fee of USD 1 or 2 may be charged.
An alternative is purifying tap water using purification tablets. It’s advisable to carry a water bottle with a built-in filtration system, allowing you to filter water from natural sources along the trail. If you prefer the conveniences of bottled water, mineral water bottles are available for purchase at around $2 to $3. Although we strictly discourage the use of one-time plastic bottles on the trek path due to the increasing issue of plastic waste on the trekking trails.
All our guides are certified and trained trekking leaders. Our guides are certified by the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), Nepal. They have years of experience working in this line of work and know the different trekking trails of Nepal, mountain ranges, culture, and mountain sickness.

Additional Information
The Lower Dolpo Trek region lies in the Dolpa district of western Nepal, within the boundaries of the Shey Phoksundo National Park, Nepal’s largest national park. It is situated in the rain-shadow area of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, which gives the region a dry, barren landscape resembling the Tibetan Plateau. The trek begins from Juphal, a small airstrip town reached via a short flight from Nepalgunj, and winds through remote valleys, traditional villages, high passes, and alpine forests. Lower Dolpo is geographically isolated and culturally rich, home to Tibetan Buddhist and Bon communities, making it a unique destination for trekkers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences in one of the most untouched corners of the Himalayas.
The Lower Dolpo Trek is a truly special experience because it offers a rare blend of raw natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and deep isolation that few trekking routes in Nepal can match. Trekkers journey through stunning, windswept landscapes, ancient trade routes, and remote high mountain passes that have remained unchanged for centuries. The trail leads to the mesmerizing Shey Phoksundo Lake, with its turquoise waters set against dramatic cliffs—one of Nepal’s most breathtaking natural wonders. Along the way, you’ll encounter authentic Tibetan-influenced villages, ancient Bon monasteries, and the warm hospitality of local communities who still live traditional lives. Its remoteness, lack of crowds, and immersive cultural encounters make the Lower Dolpo Trek not just a physical journey, but a profound exploration of one of Nepal’s last true wilderness regions.
The Lower Dolpo Trek is suitable for physically fit and adventurous trekkers who are looking for a more remote and culturally immersive experience in Nepal. While the trek does not require technical climbing skills, it involves long trekking days, high-altitude passes over 5,000 meters, and limited access to modern facilities, making it best for those with some prior high-altitude trekking experience or strong preparation. Trekkers who enjoy solitude, raw natural landscapes, and traditional Himalayan culture will find this route especially rewarding. It’s ideal for those who prefer off-the-beaten-path exploration, have a good level of endurance and mental resilience, and are comfortable with basic accommodations and camping in remote environment
The Lower Dolpo Trek typically covers a distance of approximately 160 to 190 kilometers (100 to 120 miles), depending on the exact route and any optional side trips. The trek usually takes around 16 to 20 days to complete, starting from Juphal in the Dolpa district and traversing through remote villages like Dunai, Tarakot, Dho Tarap, and Ringmo, before reaching the stunning Shey Phoksundo Lake. Despite the moderate daily distances, the combination of high altitudes, rugged terrain, and multiple mountain passes—such as Numa La (5,190 m) and Baga La (5,170 m)—adds to the physical challenge. The long duration and remote setting make the Lower Dolpo Trek a true expedition-style adventure, offering an unforgettable journey through one of Nepal’s most secluded and culturally rich landscapes.
The Lower Dolpo Trek region, located within the Shey Phoksundo National Park, is a biologically diverse area that showcases a wide range of Himalayan flora and fauna across various altitudes. In the lower elevations, trekkers pass through lush forests of pine, fir, spruce, juniper, and rhododendron, while the higher zones feature alpine meadows and barren landscapes typical of the trans-Himalayan terrain. This region is home to rare and endangered wildlife such as the snow leopard, Himalayan blue sheep, musk deer, Himalayan tahr, and Tibetan wolf. If you are looking for alternative treks into this beautiful region, we have more options for this trekking region.
Upon arrival in Kathmandu, you will be promptly transported to your designated hotel, a comfortable and well-maintained 3 star hotel. Your stay includes twin-sharing/double accommodation with breakfast. All the rooms have a private bathroom, TV, and ample storage for your luggage.
If you desire a more exclusive experience, you can upgrade to single occupancy or enhance your stay to a 4- or 5-star hotel at an additional charge.
Due to the remoteness and underdeveloped infrastructure of the Lower Dolpo Trek, attached toilet or bathroom facilities are extremely rare along the route. Most accommodations are basic local teahouses or camping sites, where shared toilets—usually simple squat-style—are the norm. In higher and more isolated villages, facilities may be limited to outdoor pit toilets, and running water may not always be available. Trekkers opting for fully organized camping treks can expect better-managed sanitation setups arranged by the support crew, including portable toilet tents. It is essential to be mentally prepared for minimal hygiene standards and to carry personal hygiene supplies like toilet paper, wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and possibly a pee funnel for convenience.
Having travel insurance that covers high-altitude adventure activities (above 5,000 m) is mandatory. This includes contingencies like flight disruptions, accidents, and emergency evacuations.
You can buy such insurance online from various providers. Some of the common choices based on client experiences for Lower Dolpo Trek include:
USA and Canada: Tugo, United Health Care, World Nomad, Blue Cross
Australia and New Zealand: Fast Cover, Allianz Australia
Singapore: Ergo, World Nomad (Explore plan level 3)
Europe: Europe Assistance, Austrian Alpine Club, Allianz Europe
India: ICICI Lombard
However, please ensure that the policy covers trekking up to 6,000 m altitude. While these are just suggestions, the policies, and coverage may vary accordingly. Contact these insurers directly to inquire about their offerings before making a purchase.
Charging phones and gadgets on the Lower Dolpo Trek can be quite challenging due to the region's extreme remoteness and lack of electricity in most villages. Unlike popular trekking routes, many areas in Lower Dolpo region have no access to a reliable power supply, and even solar charging facilities are limited or unavailable. Some lower villages and teahouses may offer solar-powered charging for a small fee, but this cannot be guaranteed throughout the trek. Trekkers are strongly advised to carry multiple power banks and, if possible, a portable solar charger to keep essential devices running. Power conservation is crucial, so it’s best to keep phones in battery-saving mode and limit use to navigation, photography, and emergency communication. It’s advisable to bring two-pin (type C) and three-pin (type D) adapters. However, you can either bring these adapters or buy them in Kathmandu.
We conduct Group Departure Treks as well as Private Treks. If you have your own group, we provide you discounts based on your group size.
However, you will not get discounts for groups we assemble or our Fixed Group Departure Treks. For a group of 12 or more, we add an assistant guide. You can choose to conduct a private trek exclusively for your team.
After completing the trek and tour, you may want to stay a couple of days extra in Nepal. There are many beautiful and adventurous places in Nepal. Lower Dolpo Trek is a fairly challenging trek but incredibly rewarding adventure. A good level of physical fitness is required because it involves walking for several hours a day, frequently uphill, and at high altitudes. We highly recommend that you keep up a regular exercise routine for weeks before the hike. If you have any health issues, consult with your doctor before starting the hike.
Here are some tips to help you overcome difficulties during the trek and make the most of it:
Physical Preparation
We recommend you start fitness training before your trek. Focus on cardiovascular exercises, strength training, and endurance activities. Incorporate uphill and downhill walking into your training to simulate the trek's terrain.
Altitude Acclimatization
This extraordinary trek usually starts from Juphal, which is accessible by domestic flight from Nepalgunj. The trek to Lower Dolpo Trek region involves a gradual ascent, allowing your body to acclimatize to the increasing altitude. Our itinerary grants your body time to adapt to the increasing altitude, reducing the risk of altitude-related illnesses. As you venture deeper into the Upper Dolpo trekking region, the air gets thinner, the temperatures drop, and the landscapes become more surreal.
Hydration and Nutrition
You may have heard that everyone should drink eight glasses of water a day. Our guides are trained to keep you well-hydrated throughout the trek. We recommend you drink as much water as you can. Consume a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates, proteins, and essential nutrients. Eating light but frequent meals is recommended. Keep a nutrition bar in your day bag.
Pacing and Rest
Rest is essential for acclimatization and overall well-being. Pace yourself during the trek. Avoid rushing to prevent exhaustion and altitude-related issues. Listen to your body and our guide. Always take breaks as needed.
Proper Gear
We recommend you invest in high-quality, certified trekking gear, including comfortable and sturdy boots, warm clothing, a good backpack, a day bag pack, and other essential equipment. Dress in layers so that you can easily adjust to changing temperatures and conditions.
Mental Preparation
Stay positive and focused. A positive mindset can help you overcome challenges more effectively. If you have any issues that come to mind, kindly share them with our guide.
Our guides and porters are experienced in the Lower Dolpo trekking region. They can provide valuable insights and assist with logistics, allowing you to focus on the trek itself.
Medical facilities in the Lower Dolpo Trek region are extremely limited, due to its remote and isolated location. Most villages along the trail have no hospitals or well-equipped health posts, and the few basic clinics that exist may lack trained personnel, modern equipment, or essential medicines. In case of illness or injury, emergency evacuation—often by helicopter—is the only reliable option, especially when dealing with altitude-related conditions or serious health issues. Trekkers are strongly advised to carry a comprehensive first aid kit, including medications for altitude sickness, gastrointestinal issues, and pain relief. Having travel insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is essential. It's also recommended to trek with a guide trained in first aid and to monitor your physical condition regularly throughout the journey.
