Overview

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek is an extraordinary adventure that blends rugged trekking, ancient Buddhist culture, and luxury helicopter return—all set against the backdrop of Nepal’s remote Himalayan wilderness. This unique journey explores the hidden Tsum Valley, also known as the “Hidden Valley of Happiness,” a sacred Himalayan enclave that only opened to trekkers in 2008. This region lies in the northern Gorkha District, close to the Tibetan border, and is a spiritual sanctuary rich with ancient monasteries, sacred caves, and vibrant Tibetan traditions. Perfect for those seeking both isolation and comfort, the helicopter return offers a scenic and time-saving exit from the high mountains.

Unlike busier trekking routes like Everest or Annapurna, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek offers a crowd-free and immersive cultural experience. The trail follows the roaring Budi Gandaki River, crosses dramatic suspension bridges, and winds through rhododendron forests, highland villages, and alpine landscapes. Along the way, trekkers are welcomed by the warm-hearted Tsumba people, whose lifestyle remains deeply rooted in Tibetan Buddhism. Ancient gompas like Mu Gompa and Rachen Nunnery provide spiritual sanctuaries nestled in the Himalayan wild. The dramatic mountain scenery is amplified by views of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Mount Manaslu (8,163m).

What sets this trek apart is the helicopter return from Samagaon or a nearby village, which allows trekkers to avoid long descents while enjoying a bird’s-eye view of the Himalayan giants. This added comfort is ideal for families, adventurers short on time, or anyone looking to elevate their trekking experience. With its off-the-beaten-path charm, rich Tibetan culture, and the thrill of high-altitude flight, the Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek is a perfect blend of tradition and luxury—tailored for modern explorers who want to experience the soul of Nepal without compromising on time or comfort.

Day 03: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola (869m) via Soti Khola – approx. 9 hours

We will start our trek by driving to Machha Khola from Kathmandu via Soti Khola in a private tourist vehicle after having breakfast. We will drive on a concrete paved road from Kathmandu to Dhading Besi for 3 to 4 hours.

After that, the road becomes bumpy and winding, and we will drive on a dirt road for approximately 5 to 7 hours to reach Machha Khola. The total drive for the day will be around 8 to 10 hours. We will provide a private 4WD vehicle and an experienced driver for your comfort and safety.
Overnight in teahouse.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 04: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat (1350m) – approx. 6 hours

You cross the Machha Khola - Fish Stream - and head upstream to the tiny village of Khola Bensi and the hot springs at Tatopani. The valley sides are steeping until they are impassable and the route then switches to the left bank by way of a suspension bridge. The trail is quite exposed and challenging in places. After a short section of forest path you reach the single teahouse at Doban. Above Doban, the Buri Gandaki descends an impressive series of rapids. Beyond this steep section, the river is much more placid, meandering across a broad gravel bed. At Lauri, you re cross the river on a suspension bridge, and then climb on a high path to the fields of Jagat, where you camp.
Overnight in teahouse.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 05: Trek from Jagat to Chisopani (1660m) - approx. 5 hours

We must complete the ACAP procedure in Jagat. We start today's journey by ascending over a rocky ridge to Salleri and then descending to Sirdibas via a flat level course. The valley widens slightly as the trail climbs to Ghatta Khola. Philim is a large village populated mainly by Gurung. The town is well-known for its Japanese-built schools and police stations. We reach Chisopani after walking past Philim to the north via a forest with views of the shrinking valley.
Overnight in teahouse.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Day 06: Trek from Chisopani to Chumling (2386m) - approx. 6 hours

We leave Chisopani and walk for about 30 minutes through the gorge, where we can see a large and stunning waterfall. This day is challenging because there is a climbing path that runs almost the road's whole length. We descend through the pine and rhododendron tree forest to the path that leads to Tsum Valley. Trekkers can see panoramic views of the mountains along the way.

As we continue our journey, we pass through Lokpa, a small but lovely village. It lies along the old trail. We must descend for half an hour to Lungwa Khola and then climb for two hours north through pines and rhododendrons before reaching Gumlung. We arrive in Chumling after passing the Siyar Khola, which lies in the valley's lower reaches. Chumling lies on the south face of the Shingri Himal, with a stunning view of the Shringi Himal. You can also tour the old Chumling Gompa and the village's stone streets.

Day 07: Trek from Chumling to Chokhangparo (3010m) - approx. 5 hours

Today, after breakfast in Chumling, we begin our walk to Chokhangparo by crossing the river's suspension bridge on the opposite bank. The breathtaking views of the valley and Ganesh Himal more than compensate for today's walk. Then we travel across fertile agricultural land rich in maize and potatoes. The houses are traditional Tibetan, with firewood barricades on the roofs but no flat roofs since it rains and snows here. Cross a massive slip where rocks and floodwaters cleared the field even up onto the opposite bank, killing five people in 1999, but a forest of new trees now replaces it. Spectacular views of Ganesh Himal and long suspension bridges on the way up the valley to the east are visible.

We climb for over two hours on a well-graded but exposed trail to upper Tsum and the enter villages of Chokhangparo, stone houses with a few iron roofs nestled under cliffs, passing through Rainjam crossing Serpu Khola. Chokhangparo is a flat land village comprised of two towns, Chokhang and Paro. The region follows Tibetan Buddhism; thus, you will see the influence of Tibetan Buddhism prevalent in Nepal. If weather permits, you will see a splendid view of Himalchuli (7893m) and Ganesh Himal (7140m).

Day 08: Trek from Chokhangparo to Nile (3361m) - approx. 6 hours

When you climb from Chokhangparo, you may experience symptoms of altitude sickness. As a result, we recommend that you take care and drink lots of water to stay hydrated. We travel east, passing through small villages and a local school. The beautiful view here brings our trek to a halt in honor of the beautiful nature. We gradually ascend over a chorten mountain, passing Lama Gaon (3202m) through the flat fields, looking across the vast crops field and river to the massive courtyard of the Rachen Gompa/ Nunnery Gompa (3240m) with excellent pilgrim accommodation. The Himalayan Thar dominated these terrains; hence you will get to see them a lot. The people speak Tsumba, which is similar to the Tibetan language. We can also pay a brief visit before crossing the Shiyar Khola, passing through the hamlets of Phurbe (3251m) and Pangdun (3258m). We'll also go through an unusual round stupa before arriving at the larger village of Chhule (3347m) via an impressive entrance gate.

Then we pass through the well-kept villages of Lar (micro hydropower), Phurbe, and Pangdun. We exit the old historic Buddha Stupa in a way that crosses the town of Chhule. The children here all wear chubas, which are Tibetan dressing gowns. Also, you will see many yaks grazing around the place. Upstream to cross the bridge and ascend to the Nile (pronounced Nee-lay). In the upper Tsum valley, the Nile is the last village to the north. This village has a significant number of households and lies on the Shiar Khola banks. Both towns are typical, with livestock compounds built into the houses and protected huts to dry crops.

Day 09: Trek from Nile to Mu Gompa (3700m) - approx. 7 hours

We are getting close to the Tibetan border now. Trek through Tibetan landscapes to the valley's west bank. Climb to the top of the Mu Gompa. This Mu Gompa is the region's largest monastery. Mu Gompa lies at the highest and most isolated point in the Tsum Valley.

Day 10: Trek back to Chumling

Leaving the charm of Tsum valley, we retrace our route back to Chumling.

Day 11: Trek from Chumling to Deng (1860m) - approx. 7 hours

We climb steeply up onto a beautiful trail before descending to cross the water. We go through a few small towns before ascending to an impressive valley. There, we come across Mani stones (prayer stones) cut into roadside cliffs, suggesting that we have reached Tibetan territory. We take a two-hour round trip excursion to the remote settlement of Prok in the afternoon.

Day 12: Trek from Namrung to Lho Gham (3180m) - approx. 4 hours

We continue our journey from Namrung. The trek eventually ascends into the alpine, where you'll catch the first sight of Mt. Manaslu and Manaslu north. After this, on the route, many locals dress in chubas.

Day 13: Trek from Lho Gham to Samagaon (3500m) - approx. 6 hours

After Lho, we walk through the stone gate and the village's long Mani stone wall, with a perfect view of Peak 29 ahead. You can take a side trip to Pungen from here to get a close-up view of Manaslu. The trail leads the Pungen lateral moraine towards Sama. It takes another 20 minutes to get to Sama Gompa for the night.

Day 14: Explore around Samagaon

You have choices for short or long hikes. The full-day hike is towards Manaslu Base Camp (approximately a 6-7 hour round trip). Alternatively, there are half-day walks either across the valley or to Birendra Tal.

Day 15: Heli Flight back to Kathmandu

Today, we take an exciting heli flight back to Kathmandu. From the flight, capture the aerial view of mountains and deep gorges in your mind. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be escorted to your respective hotel.

3. Health Issues and Vaccinations Requirement for Manaslu Heli Trek

As vaccination requirements change frequently, we suggest you to consult your doctor at least 2 months prior to the beginning of your trip. We recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis and polio.

The main health consideration during Manaslu Heli Trekking is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). You may experience some mild symptoms initially, such as headache, lethargy, nausea and difficulty sleeping, but these should lessen within a few days. To avoid Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), people take pills called ‘Diamox’. You can also use these pills after consulting with your doctor and purchase them in Kathmandu. Our itinerary will allow your body to acclimatize properly and handle the low oxygen rate. If you have ever suffered from altitude sickness, or have a heart or breathing complaint, we highly recommend you to consult your doctor about your suitability for trekking in high altitude areas before booking. We suggest that you take some pain-killing pills with you and enough medicine for cold, diarrhea, nausea and fever. Some nasal ointment and throat-moistening pills will greatly help for those who are sensitive to chilly or freezing weather conditions.

4. Difficulty Level of the trek

Manaslu Heli Trek is a moderate trek that goes right into remotest corner of high mountain country and over high pass. The maximum altitude you reach is at 5106 meters. No previous experience is required, you should be moderately fit, used to some regular exercise and enjoy walking in the high altitude conditions.

5. Trekking Type

Manaslu Heli Trek is a tea house trek. A Nepalese tea house is a lodge or guest house located in one of the trekking regions in the Nepal Himalayas. At the end of the day’s trekking you pitch up and have a room and food provided. Teahouse trekking in Nepal is an incredible experience.

6. Accommodation on the trek

There are plenty of basic, clean and friendly lodges along the trail. You often have to share rooms but you can also stay in single rooms where possible. Rooms are basic, normally just a bed with a pillow and blankets. A few have electric blanket, hot bags (luxury lodges) and all have a spacious dining room-lounge. We will accommodate you and your group in a comfortable local lodge each day. The Guide coordinates with the local lodge owners and a porter is sent ahead to book the required rooms for the group (rooms cannot always be booked in advance).

7. Food on the Trek

On trek, we have breakfast and dinner in the tea-houses/lodges we spend the night and lunch on our way to the next destination. Nepalese, Tibetan, the more common continental and Indian cuisines are common choices in the menu.

To get an idea about your meals on the go, breakfast comprises a hot beverage, toasts, pancakes, eggs, etc. while lunch will include rice items, noodles, potato varieties, pizza, pasta, burger, meat items, and so on. The starters in dinnertime are soup varieties while the main course includes more or less similar items as that of lunch menu, including a dessert item and a hot beverage.

8. A Typical Day on a Tea House Trek in Nepal

We provide a comfortable experience on our teahouse lodge-style treks. Our team works hard to support you so that you can relax and enjoy trekking in Nepal. The lodges provide your meals in a communal dining room. There is a range in standard and service in teahouse lodges depending on location. i.e. lodges at higher altitude and places with fewer trekkers tend to have more basic facilities.

The day starts with getting up in your room shared with another trekker in our group. Before heading for breakfast you pack your overnight gear into your duffel bag. You would have given your breakfast orders to the guide to pass onto the kitchen last night. At the designated time the group will assemble in the dining room to eat breakfast. The menu has a range of items to choose from such as porridge, cereals, chapattis, and a choice of egg dishes. There is also the choice of tea or coffee plus other hot drinks like the popular ginger, lemon honey drink.

While the group is having breakfast the porters arrange their loads and set off in the cool of the morning. After breakfast, between 7am and 8am, we start trekking. The pace of the trek is moderate as there is plenty of time in the itinerary to reach the lodge for tonight. There will be plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, take photos and explore the local villages. Lunch will be around midday at a teahouse lodge by the side of the trail.

After lunch, we continue the trek and on most days we arrive at the lodge by mid-afternoon. For dinner, you get a two-course dinner (soup and main meal). The menus are quite standard with a range of dishes such as dal bhat, momos and the famous Sherpa stew. Dal bhat is a Nepalese dish of rice and lentils with vegetable curry. It is also possible to order spaghetti and pasta; pizzas; vegetable burgers and chips and fried rice.

After the meal, the leaders will discuss the plan for the next day. Afterwards, people might stay in the dining room chatting about the day’s events or playing cards. After a tiring day, most people head to their rooms quite early for the night. Tomorrow is likely to be very similar to today!

We cater for a variety of dietary requirements. There are always meals that are suitable for vegetarians. During booking, we find out if you have any dietary needs and agree upon meal plans before departure. If you have any questions about the food provided please get in touch with us to discuss further.

9. Land Transfers

We take a helicopter ride from Kathmandu to Namrung in Manaslu region. After the completion of the trek you will be transferred back to Kathmandu from Dharapani via Besisahar by private transportation.

10. Personal Expenses – Approximate money you should carry on the trek

Our 11 days Manaslu Heli Trek cost is all inclusive of your accommodation, meals, permits and other official expenses.(See price includes and excludes section for more detail). Besides, other expenses depend on your spending habits. A USD 10-15 is sufficient to buy bottled water, snacks, chocolate bars, hot and cold drinks, and showers during the trek besides your included meals and accommodation.

11. Money Exchange

You can exchange money at a Bank or the money exchange counter in cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara. Many Tourist class Hotels have money exchange facilities. For Trekking, there are Banks and exchange counters at major Tourist hubs like Namche and Lukla. These days, there are availability of ATMs everywhere in Kathmandu and some in Lukla and Namche.

12. Tips

Tips are appreciated by your support team after the completion of your trekking in Nepal. The amount depends on your budget and appreciation of their work. As a suggestion, we advise that you can allocate 5- 10 % of the total tour cost as tips. It is recommended that you talk to the members and hand it over individually as per the hierarchy on the last day of the trek.

13. Facility of communication available on trek

Communication during Manaslu Heli Trek is not challenging but there are certain things to be considered. Phone reception is available in most of the places during the trek. Likewise, WIFI services are also available on the trail. To use WIFI services, you are expected to pay a fee. These fees increase as you scale up the higher altitude. Usually, the cost of WIFI services ranges about NPR 400-500 each depending upon the location you are staying in. And another option to stay connected with your family back home is by using an internet data package if you have a local SIM card. You can buy a SIM card around the street of your trip hotel in Kathmandu/Pokhara or ask your guide to arrange it one for you. However, we must inform you that internet service may not be strong in all places.

14. Luggage while trekking

During Manaslu Heli Trekking, your main luggage will be carried by porter. Please keep your luggage as light as possible around 12 to 15 kgs for travel safety and porter welfare as per IPPG standard. You simply carry a day pack with water bottle, camera, sun-screen, spare jacket etc. You can leave your valuable items at your hotel in Kathmandu while trekking. Many hotels have a locker system and provide a deposit slip for the valuables kept under the hotel's safekeeping.

15. Physical Fitness

When you go on the Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek, you'll be walking at high altitudes, more than 4,000 meters above sea level. At these heights, there's less oxygen in the air, which can make you sick if your body isn't ready. This is known as altitude sickness. To prevent this, you should prepare your body for high altitudes. This entails focusing on cardiovascular endurance through activities like hiking, running, or swimming to build stamina for long hours of walking at high altitudes. Strength training is equally crucial, targeting muscles in the legs, core, and upper body to navigate steep ascents, descents, and rocky terrain with ease. Flexibility is also important for preventing injuries and moving efficiently, thus incorporating regular stretching exercises is essential.

15. Trekking Gears and Equipments

You will need walking boots, sleeping bag (4 seasons/ -20C rated), waterproof jacket and trousers, fleece jacket, warm hat and gloves, sunglasses, water bottle, sun-screen and day pack. Comprehensive list of equipment will be provided once you book your trip. It's not necessary to spend a lot of money buying extra equipment and clothing before your trip. Majority of these gears can be bought or hired at reasonable rates in Kathmandu.

16. Climate & best time to do the trek

The main trekking season in Nepal is from October to mid-May when daytime temperatures at most altitudes are generally comfortable for walking, the sky is clear much of the time and rain and snow are occasional occurrences. Daytime temperatures will vary from 15ºC to 35ºC in the Kathmandu Valley to around 10ºC at 3,600m and progressively lower the higher we go.

Different seasons offer different advantages for trekking.

Post Monsoon/autumn: Mid-September to November. This is the main trekking season in Nepal. Day temperatures in Kathmandu are approximately above 20ºC. Skies are usually clear and days on trek are sunny and mild with clear mountain views. At the highest altitudes although the days can be nice and sunny the temperatures can drop to 10ºC and much lower. Nights will be colder with temperatures dropping as low as minus 10ºC and lower at the highest altitudes.

Pre-monsoon/spring: March to May. Both day and night temperatures will be warmer in general but haze will often build up in the afternoons. It is very hot in the lowlands and temperatures rise to 35ºC in Kathmandu. Flowers bloom in this season and this is one of the reasons people chose to trek in spring.

Snow can be expected on any departure, usually at the higher altitudes. Summit day will be a very early start (usually about 2am) and will be extremely cold. Although mostly it is calm and clear on summit day the mountain does occasionally get high winds. You need to be equipped for temperatures as low as minus 25ºC plus wind chill on summit day.

Please remember that in any mountain area the weather is never wholly predictable and you should be prepared and equipped to deal with any differences in weather beyond the conditions described above.

17. First Aid Kit

We supply a medical bag with standard medicines prescribed by trekking doctors and a user’s manual. Since our staffs/guides are not qualified for suggesting medications to western clients, we would request you to use the medicines upon your own risk. It is safer and more reliable if you have your own medicine kit and not depend on what we have.

18. Rescue /Evacuation

Your safety and security are our top priority, and we always make sure that nothing untoward happen to you. However, if anything serious like sickness or a casualty occurs, we will do everything to transfer you to the nearest hospital. As you are responsible for all the expenses incurred in evacuation, please make sure that it is covered by your insurance before assigning for it.

19. Drinking Water on the Trek

Drinking water is an important consideration during Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek. It is recommended to drink at least 3-4 liters of water per day to stay hydrated and avoid altitude sickness. Trekkers can obtain drinking water from several sources along the trekking route, including bottled water, boiled water, and purified water. Bottled water is available at tea houses along the way, but it is expensive and generates a lot of plastic waste. Boiled water is a cheaper and more environmentally friendly option, and most tea houses provide this service for a small fee. Alternatively, trekkers can bring their own water filtration system or water purification tablets to purify water from streams or rivers. However, it is important to ensure that the water is purified before drinking it to avoid waterborne illnesses.

20. All our guides are certified guides

All our guides are certified and trained trekking leaders. Our guides are certified by the Nepal Academy of Tourism and Hotel Management (NATHM), Nepal. They have years of experience working in this line of work and know the different trekking trails of Nepal, mountain ranges, culture, and mountain sickness.

Additional Information

1. Where is Manaslu Trekking Region?

The Manaslu trekking region is located in north-central Nepal, near the border with Tibet, and falls within the Gorkha District of the Gandaki Province. This region is home to Mount Manaslu (8,163 meters), the eighth-highest mountain in the world, and is part of the Manaslu Conservation Area. The trek usually begins from Soti Khola or Machha Khola, which are reachable by a long but scenic drive from Kathmandu. As you trek northward, the trail ascends through dramatic river gorges, dense pine forests, alpine meadows, and remote Tibetan-influenced villages such as Sama Gaon and Samdo. Eventually, the route crosses the challenging Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters), offering breathtaking views of the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges. Due to its proximity to the Tibetan plateau, the Manaslu region showcases a fascinating mix of Nepali and Tibetan Buddhist culture, making it both geographically and culturally distinctive.

2. Why This Trek is a Special Experience?

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek is a truly special experience because it combines the mystical allure of the sacred Tsum Valley with the raw adventure of the Manaslu Circuit, all wrapped in a time-efficient itinerary thanks to the helicopter return. Unlike more commercial routes in the Himalayas, this trek takes you into secluded areas where ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, centuries-old monasteries, and spiritually significant caves remain untouched by modern tourism. You'll walk through villages where hospitality is heartfelt, and traditions are deeply rooted in Tibetan practices, offering a rare window into a way of life few outsiders witness. The journey features dramatic landscapes ranging from subtropical forests and cascading waterfalls to glacier-carved valleys and towering Himalayan peaks, including Ganesh Himal, Himalchuli, and Mount Manaslu (8,163m). The trek's helicopter return leg elevates the adventure—offering stunning aerial views of the Himalayas while eliminating the need for long descents. This fusion of remote cultural immersion, breathtaking Himalayan scenery, and luxury travel convenience makes the Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek one of the most unique and rewarding experiences in Nepal for 2025 and beyond.

3. Who Can Do Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek?

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek is ideal for adventurous trekkers with a good level of physical fitness, a sense of cultural curiosity, and a love for off-the-beaten-path travel. While this trek does not require technical climbing skills, it does involve long walking days, steep ascents, and trekking at altitudes above 3,000 meters—making it best suited for experienced hikers or fit beginners prepared for the challenge. The inclusion of the helicopter return makes the trek more accessible for families, time-sensitive travelers, and those who want to avoid long descents without compromising on the experience. It is especially appealing to those seeking a deeper cultural journey, as the Tsum Valley offers rare insight into Tibetan Buddhist life untouched by mass tourism. If you're ready for a moderately strenuous trek enriched by Himalayan culture, dramatic landscapes, and a luxurious heli-exit, this journey is perfect for you.

4. Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek Distance

The Manaslu Tsum Valley Heli Trek covers an approximate trekking distance of 170 to 190 kilometers (105–118 miles), depending on the specific trail variations and acclimatization side hikes. The trek begins from Soti Khola or Machha Khola and ascends gradually through the dramatic Budi Gandaki River Gorge, continuing into the culturally rich and isolated Tsum Valley, before rejoining the main Manaslu Circuit Trail near Lokpa.
