Dhaulagiri Trek

The Dhaulagiri Trekking Region lies in the remote northwestern part of Nepal and is dominated by the majestic Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m)—the seventh-highest mountain in the world. This region is known for its rugged terrain, towering peaks, deep valleys, and dramatic glacial landscapes. The centerpiece of trekking in this area is the Dhaulagiri Circuit Trek, a challenging and adventurous route that circles the Dhaulagiri massif and offers trekkers a rare opportunity to explore one of Nepal’s most untouched and wild mountain environments.

Unlike popular routes in the Annapurna Trek or Everest Trek regions, the Dhaulagiri trekking area remains largely unspoiled and off-the-beaten-path, attracting only a small number of seasoned trekkers each year. The trek begins in lower villages like Darbang or Beni, passing through culturally rich settlements inhabited by Gurung, Magar, and Thakali communities before ascending into high alpine terrain. As the trail progresses, trekkers traverse remote valleys, cross high passes such as French Pass (5,360m) and Dhampus Pass (5,200m), and walk across glacial moraines and ice-covered landscapes that offer a raw and immersive Himalayan experience.

The region is also ecologically diverse, transitioning from lush forests and terraced hillsides to alpine meadows and stark high-altitude zones. Protected under the Annapurna and Dhorpatan conservation areas, the Dhaulagiri region is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including rare species like the snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, and red panda. Due to its isolation, lack of infrastructure, and demanding conditions, the Dhaulagiri Trekking Region is best suited for experienced and well-prepared trekkers seeking true adventure, solitude, and a deep connection with nature in one of Nepal’s most dramatic mountain landscapes.
