Mountain Biking Tour in Upper Mustang has become quite popular over the years. It’s not just about the challenging ascents and endless single track descents; it’s about a journey of discovery of the nomadic horse culture, breathtaking scenery and friendly heart-warming people that inhabit the region. Upper Mustang is all about desert-like topography. Hence, the Upper Mustang biking experience in this region can be full of adventure.  Also ancient caves, Tibetan influenced lifestyle and culture, breathtaking sceneries; historical forts are some interesting features of Upper Mustang region. The trail you use for mountain biking was a part of ancient Silk Road. It is probably the best and most challenging mountain biking tour in the world that leads you to have simply an unforgettable journey.

The tour will take you to Pokhara from Kathmandu, then to Muktinath in Jomsom. Then, the main biking routes will follow, including Chele, Syangboche, Charang, Lo-Manthang, and Kagbeni, to name some.

The classic route starts in Jomsom and follows the Kali Gandaki River valley, culminating in Lo Manthang, Upper Mustang's enigmatic capital.  Conquer a diverse mix of off-road and paved paths, demanding both technical skill and endurance.  You will be cycling at high altitudes, so proper acclimatization is crucial.  Ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and listen to your body.  This is challenging and rewarding mountain bike adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m). Overnight in Hotel

As you fly into Kathmandu, you'll have beautiful views over the valley, the snow capped mountain peaks in Himalaya, and of the terraced fields below. As per your arrival time, our representative will be at the airport to receive you and transfer you to your booked hotel.

Day 02: Fully day sightseeing tour in Kathmandu & Bhaktapur. Overnight in Hotel

Pashupatinath Temple

Situated 5 kilometers east of Kathmandu City, Pashupatinath temple is one of the holiest temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated amidst a lush green natural setting on the bank of the sacred Bagmati river, the temple built in pagoda style has jilted roof and richly carved silver doors. Visitors will be permitted to view the temple from the east bank of Bagmati River, entrance in the temple being strictly forbidden to all non Hindus. Pashupatinath is the centre of annual pilgrimage on the day of shivaratri which falls in the month of February/March. Behind the temple are the cremation grounds.

Boudhanath Stupa

This Stupa, 8 kilometers east of Kathmandu City, is one of the biggest in the world of its kind. It stands with four pairs of eyes in the four cardinal direction keeping watch for righteous behaviour and human prosperity. This Buddhis Stupa was built by King Man Deva at the advice of the Goddess Mani Jogini. It is built on an octagonal base inset with prayer wheels. The shrine is ringed by houses of Lamas or Buddhist priest.

Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath is located approximately 4 kilometers and this Buddhist Stupa is said to be 2000 years old. The Stupa which forms the main structure is composed of a solid hemisphere of brick and earth supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt. Painted on the four sided base of the spire are the all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. This hill is a mosaic of small Chaityas and Pagoda temples.

Bhaktapur, the City of Devotees, has many names and even more facets. Also called by the name of Bhadgaon, Khwopa and Khwopinggram in earlier days, this ancient Newar city is also listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Bhaktapur was the central palace until the 14th century for whole Kathmandu valley. Bhaktapur is known as the city of devotees. Among the three different royal palaces of the valley, it is the farthest palace. There many old break houses with Newari architect. In total, there are four different squares like durbar square, portray square, Taumadhi square and Dattatreya square. In Durbar square, there are several Hindu temples, statue, 55 windows wooden carving palace, masterpiece artistic golden gate, royal goddess Taleju temple and royal bath. Porters make clay pots and many more in portray square. The tallest temple of the valley, Nyatapola( siddhi Laxmi) is located inTaumadhi square. And trinity Hindu gods temple is in Dattatreya square. Wood carving craftsmanship is one of the best things about Bhaktapur. Newari festivals almost every month and the Bisket Jatra in Nepali New Year is good to see in Bhaktapur. A well carved wooden peacock window is dancing on the wall of pujari math.   Many of the people from Bhaktapur are the farmer. They grow Rice and seasonal vegetables. Juju Dhau(King curd) is the main desert to try for tourists.

After sightseeing tour, you get ready to proceed to Nagarkot. Nagarkot, located on a mere distance of few hour drive from Kathmandu which leads you on the valley rim hill side at an altitude of 2,100 m, Nagarkot hill top famous for striking sunrise and sunset views over array of Himalayan peaks which includes Langtang-Jugal Himal to Everest range of mountains.

Day 03: Transfer from Kathmandu to Pokhara.

Day 04: Early-morning Flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. Bike Assembling and ride to Kagbeni (2810 m)

On this day, we will take a morning flight to Jomsom from Pokhara. After reaching Jomsom, we start our very first bike ride to Kagbeni, which lies at 2,810 meters altitude. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 05: Ride to Chele (3050 m) from Kagbeni

Today after breakfast, ride from Kagbeni to Chele. The landscape is extremely dry and desert-like. You may come across a handful of trekkers and pilgrims, mainly from India, on their way to the holy temple with the eternal flame in Muktinath that burns from a natural gas source. Reaching the cultural and religious site with stunning mountain views is quite an achievement. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 06: Ride to Chrang / Tsarang (3620 m) from Chele

Today, we ride from Chele to Syangboche along the biking trails that will offer beautiful scenery. Then get to Charang, which lies approximately 3,620 meters above sea level. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 07: Ride to Lo Manthang (3810 m) from Chrang / Tsarang

You will spend part of the morning exploring the interesting village of Charang and its large monastery, before setting out for Lo Manthang. You ride gently above the valley to a large isolated chorten that marks the boundary between Charang and Lo. The trail then broadens and eventually you get your first view of the walled city of Lo Manthang. The city has only one entrance so you circumambulate the wall to the gate on the north east corner. Day 08: Ride to Kora La (4660 m) from Lo Manthang and back to Lo-Manthang via Choser

Today, we will be covering a distance of 12 kilometers as we head towards the border between Nepal and China. After a certain time spent there, we ride along the Chooser Trail towards the ancient caves at Garphu, where we can explore Cave Monastery. Following that, we make our way across the suspension bridge and return to Lo Manthang by drive. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 09: Rest day in Lo Manthang

This day is for rest and exploration of Lo-Manthang. Explore its culture, people, and geography. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 10: Ride to Dhi Gaon (3400 m) from Lo Manthang

Today, we will ride to Lo-La, which is also called Windy Pass and sits at an altitude of 3,950 meters. From here we ride one of the most exciting and challenging trails of the trip. The trail starts from Yak pasture towards the edge of the canyon. The dusty trails lead down to the scenic village of Dhigoan in the canyon. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 11: Ride to Tangge (3240 m) from Dhi Gaon

You will need to shuttle to the destination on the wilderness trails today. The paths feature excellent narrow downhill trails leading to the river. We journey to Tangge and spend the night there. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 12: Ride to Chhusang (2980 m) from Tangge

Today, we will need to exert effort to complete most of the trails by pushing and carrying. Nevertheless, the most exciting part is the downhill section with extended winding paths through the remote areas of the Himalayas. The challenging ride finishes at Chhusang where we rest for the night. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 13: Ride to Marpha (2670 m) from Chhusang via Muktinath and Lupra Valley

Ride along the pilgrimage town of Muktinath and ride towards Dhangladanda through a less-used trail. From this viewpoint, you will be riding on impressive single tracks all the way down to the river bed in Lupra Valley. Then, paddle to Jomsom where you will rest and have lunch. From Jomsom onwards, move to an old village of Marpha and take a sip of Apple Brandy. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 14: Ride to Tatopani (1190 m) from Marpha

The starting of the trail is easy to ride, but after Rukse Chaahara the trail drops about 1,000 meters in elevation. This is the most challenging and enjoyable part of today’s ride as 95% of the trails are ridable. The downhill trail takes you to Tatopani, the village known for its hot springs. Once there, enjoy a refreshing hot bath. Overnight at Teahouse.

Day 15: Ride to Beni (830 m) from Tatopani. On the same day drive back to Pokhara

Today is the last day of riding. Enjoy as you paddle towards Beni municipality, the endpoint of Annapurna Circuit biking. From here, take a jeep for Pokhara. In about 4 hours, you will reach your destination. When in the city, rest and explore. Overnight in Hotel

Day 16: Drive back to Kathmandu – approx. 7 hours. Overnight in Hotel

We drive back to Kathmandu. Another seven hours on the highway will give us time to observe the villages and towns on the way from a different angle. After reaching Kathmandu and checking into the hotel, we will have some free time to wander around the streets of Thamel.

Day 17: Fly out from Kathmandu

As per your flight time you will be transferred to the airport for your flight back home or any other destinations. The airport check-in is 3 hours prior to the departure time and the hotel checkout time is 12 PM.

Necessary Information

1. Visa to Nepal

You can obtain the Nepalese visa from Nepalese consulate in your country easily or upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. For that, you require a valid passport with 2 copies of passport size photos. Similarly, a visa for Nepal can be obtained at Nepal India border entry point at Birgunj, Nepalgunj, Kakadvitta, Bhairahawa, Gaddachowki and Kodari on the Nepal China border.

2. Welcoming upon your arrival in Nepal

We will be at the airport to welcome you upon your arrival to Nepal. We will be carrying the Raj Bala Treks & Expedition placard with your name underneath. From airport you will escorted to your hotel and we help you to check-in.

We operate Upper Mustang Mountain Biking Tour throughout the year.

5. Accommodation

There are different categories of hotels, from budget tourist standard hotels to 5 star hotels along with boutique hotels in Nepal.

6. Transportation

We use comfortable and reliable private tourist car, jeep, vans or microbuses to transport our guests. These lightweight vehicles are maneuverable in the narrow roads of Nepal. You will have a vehicle, a guide and a licensed driver at your disposal at all times. We use our own Fleet service for Transportation.

Size and type of vehicle depend on size of your group. We use two-seater car for 1-2 persons, micro luxury 6-seater van for 3-5 persons, 10-seater van for 6-9 persons and tourist coach or coaster for group size above 10 persons. Our drivers are specially trained to serve in the hospitality industry. The vehicles are checked carefully before assigning to your service.

7. Tipping

Tips are not mandatory. However you can tip your support team if you wish for, according to your budget and appreciation of their work. Normally, tip amounts for 5-10% of your total budget. All fees to sightseeing places stated in tour package are included in our cost.

8. Clothing

Clothing varies with the type of tour and season. From April to the end of October, it is warm in Kathmandu. In Nepal clothing for traveling purpose should be comfortable and light. You can also wear longer shorts provided that it is weather- friendly. In the months of November to the end of March, days are usually warm and evenings are cool. Put on your summer clothes during the day time but in the evening and night it is advisable to carry a light jacket. Winter season starts from December to February. One must be equipped with sufficient winter wears like jackets, sweaters, trousers etc to stay protected from the cold. In accordance to Nepali weather you can have your clothes well-packed in your luggage or you can also purchase clothes of your choice and needs from the clothing stores in Nepal.

9. Booking Procedure

Your booking of this tour will be confirmed by email once we receive your deposit of 20% of the total trip and the signed copy of booking form and contract. The balance is due no later than two months prior to departure. If you book a tour less than 2 months prior to departure, you must send the full payment within 7 days of confirmation by us.

10. Cancellation Policy

If you cancel your booking, the following scale of charges will apply:

  • 2 months before departure – Loss of deposit (20% of the total trip)
  • 29 days to 2 months before departure – 30% of total trip cost
  • 10 to 28 days before departure – 60% of total trip cost
  • Less than 10 days before departure – 100% of total trip cost
