The standard Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes around 7-10 days, but when trekking with kids, it is wise to add extra days to allow for slower pacing and more acclimatization.
Sample Family-Friendly Itinerary:
Day 1: Drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, trek to Ghandruk (1,940m)
This initial section passes through beautiful terraced fields and traditional villages. Ghandruk is a picturesque village where kids can interact with local Gurung communities.
Day 2: Ghandruk to Chhomrong (2,170m)
A gradual ascent that passes through forests and small villages. Kids will enjoy the suspension bridges and waterfalls along the way.
Day 3: Chhomrong to Dovan (2,600m)
This section includes both descents and steep climbs. Take breaks along the way and let the kids explore the surroundings.
Day 4: Dovan to Deurali (3,200m)
As you ascend, the landscape changes to alpine terrain. This day is shorter to allow for rest and acclimatization.
Day 5: Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m)
The final stretch involves a steady climb to the base camp. Reaching ABC is a momentous achievement for the family, offering panoramic views of Annapurna I, Machapuchare, and other towering peaks.
Day 6: Rest day at ABC, then descend to Bamboo (2,310m)
After enjoying the sunrise and views at ABC, start your descent. The descent is usually easier on kids as it involves less exertion.
Day 7-8: Return to Nayapul and drive back to Pokhara
The descent is gradual, but still take your time to enjoy the journey back.
